The Local Algorithm: Relevance, Proximity And Prominence

Google uses algorithms to rank websites and domains. Results for local businesses and services rely on their own special algorithm to determine what is the most relevant business for you. There are three main factors that Google’s local algorithm uses for improving local rankings:

The relevance of a business ultimately comes down to whether or not a business has the elements that a person is searching for. When a user submits a search, Google will go through multiple businesses that might have something that is relevant. A business that is identified by the algorithm as having exactly what the customer is looking for will be displayed on top.

The Proximity

With proximity, businesses will be displayed based off of the location of the searcher. If a business is close enough to the searcher to be considered in easy proximity, it will often display before other and more relevant search engine results. Google will often use GPS data on mobile searches and this means that if a person were to search for pizza restaurants near me, they would get results from the closest pizza restaurants to their current location.

The Prominence of Search Engine Results

If someone were searching for something in a specific place like a pizza restaurant that was in Rhode Island, they would start to see search engine results in areas farther away.. Prominence can also work with opening hours or prices on a menu. You can also search things like “best rated pizza restaurants” to have Google sort results via the best reviews for restaurants in the local area. The prominence of the business comes down to the set search terms a user has selected.

Keep some of these ideas in mind as you are optimizing your business page. Remember that with more information for your business page and a greater relevance online, you can work at gathering more search engine results!
